We all have things we want to work on about ourselves. Thankfully, there are several ways that a person can break their bad habits. Here are some of my favorites tips– tried and true.
Avoid anything that could be making you relapse into those bad habits. This means staying away from certain places, people and things that are associated with your bad habit. For instance, if you are trying to stop drinking, you are going to need to stay away from bars, alcohol, parties & perhaps friends.
Change of Lifestyle
This means that you may need to just completely overhaul the way you spend your days. This is especially true for someone trying to break the habit of overeating. Most of the time, an overeater will find that they will spend hours and hours a day watching TV. Without realizing it a person could be eating the entire time they are watching TV.
It is easy to do with out realizing or thinking about what you ate. Often times, people won’t even remember eating because they were so absorbed into what they were watching. Therefore, they have to do more than just eat less. They also need to consider what other ways they can spend their free time, what they foods are kept in the house and more.
Taking up knitting, scrapbooking or putting together a puzzle is a great way to start getting away from spending too much time eating in front of the television.
Write down your decision to break the habit once you have fully decided that you are going to break the habit for good. Writing down your goals helps to capture it in your consciousness. It helps with motivation and purpose, especially if you’re on a deadline to break that habit.
Know the Cause
Learn what the root of your bad habits are. If you do not know exactly what is causing them, you’re a lot more likely to do the bad habit again. Do whatever you have to do to find out why you do this, whatever it may be. This may be uncomfortable, but it will help to yield long term, effective results.
Pay attention to what you are thinking, especially when you are around a trigger. Most of the time, thoughts turn into actions. Once you are able to manage your thoughts, you will then be able to manage your actions. This means you need to stay positive and have confidence in yourself. Practice positive self-talk and don’t be too hard on yourself.
