4 Simple Habits for Better Work Life Balance

by Jonathan on April 11, 2012

Most of us could benefit from developing a better work life balance. Whether you are an Accountant, Entreprenuer, small business owner or writer, you can benefit from working less.

I used to struggle with that philosophy for a long time. The early bird gets the worm, right? While having a hard work ethic is an admirable skill, be certain you can make your situation worse.

Maybe you have heard the analogy of an axe. If the blade is sharp it is much easier to cut down the tree. When the blade is dull, you have to work twice as hard for the same result. Below are 4 simple daily habits that will produce a better work life balance.

4 Simple Habits for a Better Work Life Balance

work life balance1. Create downtime in your daily schedule. I had to write this into my calendar to make it happen. 6:00-9:00pm is my daily downtime. I make it a point to go outside, ride bikes with my kids, throw football, explore in the woods, or sit on the front porch swing.

2. Recharge your batteries daily. You also need to find a way to take mini-breaks throughout the day as well. If you are your own boss this is easier. You especially need breaks if you are working at a desk and sitting all day. Get up and walk around a bit. Let your mind disengage for a few minutes. Even better, take a short nap every day.  If you need to be convinced, read 5 Reasons to Take a Nap Everyday.

3. Find a designated time for exercise. We all have different work out times that we like. I prefer to exercise in the middle of the day. It breaks up my day perfectly. I sit a lot since I spend most of my morning writing. Working out at the middle of the day helps me to burn off some energy and re-charge my battery for the afternoon all at the same time.

4. Enhance your relationship talk time. Between cable tv, computers, texting, internet, iPads we can quickly become disconnected with the people who live in our same house. It is important to slow down and just enjoy the art of conversation. Go sit on your front porch swing if you have one and talk with your family. Connect with them and allow no technology to be around.

You may not be able to do all 4 habits everyday, but you can start by choosing one and trying it out for a week. Make a goal of doing the 4 habits mentioned above at least once a week if possible. It will enrich your life and make you more productive. You might be surprised by the results that you get.

Thanks Monika. It is so true. It is time to take a break when you feel like a dull axe.

“1. Create downtime in your daily schedule.” – Simply put – HUGE. Thge way we all ruch about these days, with little time for anythig but our next meeting, choore, or kids’ sporting event, means that there is precious little time for us to simply let our minds float for a while.

That has poor long term implications.

I agree with you. I close up my home office by 6:00. I literally shut the door! My family time is 6-9 pm and it is focused on my most important relationships.
