I recently started reading a new book by Larry Crabb entitled “66 Love Letters.” The book is about an insightful conversation between God and a weary Christian. The Christian is dealing with a lot of the struggles that goes on in life and wonders how the stories of the Bible can be relevant for him. What if you could have a fireside chat with God asking Him to explain the reasoning behind the different books of the Bible? The entire book has this dialogue between God and man. Some might think that this book is not Biblical because “God’s ways are above our ways.” However, I believe that the book is rooted in Biblical principles and references and not just opinion.

If you are looking to re-birth your devotional life then I challenge you to get this book. It will challenge you to see the “bigger picture” as to what God is saying instead of finding a small verse to claim for the day. Reading this book has challenged me like never before to read the Bible in bigger chunks instead of a verse or chapter a day. 66 Love Letters will also assist you in linking all of the books of the Bible into God’s bigger story. I highly recommend that you get this book and rekindle your devotional life!

Fearless by Max Lucado is one of those books that hit the shelves right at our country’s time of greatest needs. We are surrounded by fear everyday both external and internal. We face external pressures of terrorism, finances, hunger, sickness, death and many more. We also have internal fears that we carry on a daily basis such as worry, doubt, confusion, and stress. I really enjoyed the way that the chapters were laid out in the book. Max Lucado put a different spotlight in each chapter on the major fears that we face.

I think this book can provide a lot of hope and encouragement to those who are feeling the pressures of life caving in around them. This book will help you to see your difficulties from God’s point of view. Max takes the time in each chapter to give you an example direct from Scripture that you can relate to. One of the quotes that i enjoyed the most was this:

“Facing storms in life is not an option, but fearing them is…”

Your situation may not change after reading this book, but your perspective will. Take some time to read Fearless, you will be glad that you did.

Just finished one the most practical books on decision making that I have ever read. I have a whole shelf dedicated to Andy Stanley Books. The Principle of the Path by Andy Stanley is an inspiring insight into a universal principle that exists in decision making. Whether you want to be or not you are headed toward a specific destination. All of life’s choices head toward a determined destination. The reason that the book rings so true with me is because I talk about some of the same principles in my Simple Life Habits Formula report.

You are the sum of your choices in life. You are where you are right now because of the choices that you made. You can try all you want to live a detached and care free life but you are still headed in a direction.God gives us the freedom to make those choices but through His Word he has given us guidance and help.

Andy also talks quite a bit about good intentions. Good intentions can cloud our view if we are not careful. We mistakenly believe that if we mean well or have a good heart that somehow things will turn out all right in the end even if we make bad decisions. Good intentions actually cause us to deceive ourselves. Be vary careful about leaning upon good intentions. Can God take a mess and turn it around for his good? Absolutely! However, He has given us a His Word that outlines for us how we should live.

Overall, I found the book to be very insightful and encouraging. The motto of the The Principle of the Path is: “Your direction determines your destination.” I believe that to be true indeed. Let me leave you with a prayer that Andy mentions in the book. This is a prayer that he prays over his wife and kids on a regular basis. We have adopted this prayer as well for our family.

“Lord, help me to see trouble coming from a far way off, give me the wisdom to know what to do, and the courage to do it.”

I read an inspiring story this week that I want to share with you. Obstacles Welcome by Ralph de la Vega is a personal account of how a ten year old boy escaped Communist Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis and came to America with nothing. Today, Ralph de la Vega is the President & CEO of AT&T Mobility.

Early on in the book he talks about how out of the enormous challenges in his life came some of the best opportunities. He challenges the reader to look for and expect opportunity to show up in the midst of great challenges that you face in life and how you can truly overcome obstacles.

I found the first half of the book to be much more enjoyable than the second half. Don’t get me wrong the book has some solid basic principles for work and life spread throughout, but I found the second half of the book to be geared towards manager level employees that work in large corporations.

A few principles that I found particularly helpful were:

How to learn and unlearn things in life

Opportunities exist everywhere (if you look for them)

Being comfortable with being uncomfortable

I still think that Obstacles Welcome is a must read as the story itself will inspire you.
